About Zoe Grey

Zoe Grey is an Oakland-based multimedia artist whose practice centers on painting and illustration. Rooted in surrealism, queer and feminist theory, her art practice explores how images can communicate emotional states and lived experiences. Drawing from domestic interiors and familiar home spaces, her work assembles quiet, intimate scenes that are subtly disrupted by uncanny or surreal elements. Through these interventions, Grey examines feelings of safety, vulnerability, and disturbance—particularly as they relate to gender and sexual identity. Their paintings invite viewers into moments of stillness that are both comforting and uneasy, encouraging reflection on the fragile, conditional nature of safety and the ways private spaces can hold both refuge and threat.

In addition to her studio practice, Grey is deeply engaged in community-centered teaching throughout the East Bay, designing digital arts and creative technology classes for youth STEAM programs. Her work as an educator reflects a belief that access to creative expression and technological literacy are essential tools for empowerment and connection.

Grey is currently pursuing her MFA at California College of the Arts (CCA), where she continues to develop a practice grounded in experimentation, pedagogy, and social engagement.
